Background of the Study
Modern religious practices in Oron Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, have increasingly intersected with traditional spiritual beliefs, affecting the status and preservation of indigenous shrines. As contemporary faiths gain prominence, traditional shrines—once central to communal rituals and ancestral veneration—face neglect and reinterpretation (Uko, 2023). Rapid urbanization and the proliferation of modern religious institutions have led to a decline in the practice and upkeep of ancient shrines, challenging their cultural and historical integrity (Effiong, 2024). This phenomenon has prompted debates about religious syncretism and cultural continuity. The transformation of spiritual landscapes is not merely a reflection of changing beliefs but also indicative of broader social shifts, including generational change and globalization. Traditional shrines, with their embedded historical narratives and ritualistic practices, are being re-evaluated in light of modern ideologies. The study explores how modern religious practices impact the maintenance, perception, and usage of traditional shrines, highlighting conflicts between progressive religious trends and the preservation of ancestral heritage (Aritonang, 2024). Through a comprehensive analysis, this research seeks to provide insights into reconciling modernity with traditional spiritual values in Oron.

Statement of the Problem
Modern religious practices are gradually diminishing the cultural significance of traditional shrines in Oron. The rise of contemporary religious institutions has led to reduced patronage and neglect of indigenous sacred sites (Nse, 2023). As traditional practices wane, the associated cultural heritage and historical narratives risk being lost. Insufficient support for shrine preservation and conflicting ideologies contribute to a crisis of identity among local communities (Okon, 2024). This study addresses the need to investigate the extent to which modern religious practices influence the decline of traditional shrines and to explore potential preservation strategies (Eben, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of modern religious practices on traditional shrines.

  • To document changes in community perceptions of indigenous sacred sites.

  • To recommend strategies for preserving traditional shrines amid modern influences.

Research Questions:

  • How have modern religious practices altered the status of traditional shrines in Oron?

  • What are the community perceptions regarding the decline of indigenous shrines?

  • Which preservation strategies can effectively safeguard traditional spiritual sites?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Modern religious practices have a significant negative impact on the preservation of traditional shrines.

  • H2: Community perceptions of traditional shrines have shifted due to modern religious influences.

  • H3: Targeted cultural preservation programs can mitigate the loss of indigenous shrines.

Significance of the Study
This study is important for religious scholars, cultural preservationists, and community leaders by highlighting the impact of modern religious practices on traditional shrines. It aims to bridge the gap between contemporary faith expressions and indigenous spiritual heritage. The findings will assist in developing strategies that maintain cultural integrity while accommodating evolving religious dynamics (Udo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the effect of modern religious practices on traditional shrines in Oron Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, focusing exclusively on indigenous spiritual sites without extending to other religious institutions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Modern Religious Practices: Contemporary faith expressions and institutionalized religions that influence local belief systems.

  • Traditional Shrines: Indigenous sacred sites used for ancestral veneration and ritual practices.

Cultural Heritage: The legacy of physical artifacts and intangible attributes inherited from past generations
